Undeniably the world is shifting. The sands have always shifted. Technology incessantly shifts. “Shift Happens.” While relegated to bumper stickers, self-help campaigns, and culture change initiatives, the term “Shift Happens” is actually attributed to one of the central ideas in Thomas Kuhn’s, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, published over 50 years and 1.4 million copies ago.
What I would like to point out today is that shift continually happens around us, but our internal shift is a matter of choice, not circumstance. As human beings we naturally seek stasis. For some, change is stasis and for others not so much. If you want to see more clearly and learn to adapt you must consciously choose to shift. Shifting may involve releasing your hold on past-habits, attitudes and paradigms of operating. It also involves finding a new way to look at things. Kuhn referred to shift as an alteration based on a static comparison or universal law.
How often do we hold our personal beliefs and habits as tightly to our bosom as science and math hold the Newtonian Laws of Motion. Recognize the need and opportunity to shift by letting go of past practices and taking on new habits, attitudes and behaviors. Of course the choice is yours. I am merely inclined to provide the vehicle. Shift happens. Make yours a profound and productive one.
